SSH File Transfer Application for www-dev.temple.edu

SSH is a Secure Shell file transfer application used by Temple University Webmasters.

Overview

SSH is a utility used by Temple University webmasters to transfer files from a local computer to Temple's Development Web Server and from the Web Server to a local computer.

Access

SSH is used on a local computer and can be downloaded free of charge from the Help Desk download site at http://download.temple.edu/.  An AccessNet Username and Password is required.

In order to use SSH, you must be an authorized webmaster to the website for which you will be transferring files.  To become a webmaster, please complete the webform at http://www.temple.edu/webform.

Instructions

  1. Obtain a copy of SSH from the Help Desk download center.
  2. From a computer connected to the Internet, locate and then double click the SSH Secure Shell Client icon.

  3. From the Edit menu, select Settings.

  4. From the Settings menu, select Mode that is located under File Transfer.

  5. From the Mode menu, select the Binary radio button, under the ASCII extensions, remove all file extensions by selecting each extension, and then clicking on the red located on the right.
  6. Select OK.
  7. To connect to the web server, select Quick Connect from the File menu.

  8. From the Connect to Remote Host window, enter the web address of the server for which you are connecting, enter your AccessNet Username, accept the value for the default Port Number, and then select Password from the Authentication Method list.

  9. From the Enter Password window, enter your password, and then select OK.

    Note:  If you are connecting to a server for the first time, you will be prompted to save the encryption keys onto your computer.  These keys make your connection to the server secure.  If you are using a personal computer, click Yes so that you will no longer be prompted to complete this action.

  10. A connection to the server will be established once you have completed all of the steps.
  11. To transfer files to your web server, locate and then double click on the destination folder located in the right window.

  12. Drag files from your local computer located on the left window to the destination server folder located on the right.

Remote Access

If you would like to make changes to a website  hosted on www-dev.temple.edu from off campus,  you will need special authorization by the Computer Services department.  Please submit a help request via TUhelp with the following information:

  1. Viral Mehta as the consultant name,
  2. In the ticket details include:
  • The reason you need remote access in the ticket summary - To access the web server so I may make edits from off-campus.
  • Your accessnet ID
  • The type of cell phone you have (phone number is not necessary)
  • Your contact information
